Unless concerned citizens intervene before July 1, 2012, Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park will be closed and the artifacts and displays moved to a Sacramento warehouse. In theory this will continue until the State budget improves, but that seems unlikely for the near future. Thus, the Adobe will deteriorate, there may be increased vandalism and, most importantly, thousands of 4th graders will lose the opportunity to learn about early California history at the park.

That s the bad news. The good news is that as a result of a bill signed by Governor Jerry Brown, nonprofit organizations can operate parks under contract with the State.

The Sonoma/Petaluma State Historic Parks Association was founded in 1982 to support the Historic Parks in Sonoma and Petaluma. We are committed to saving Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park and to developing a comprehensive business plan to operate and maintain the park. To that end we have developed a preliminary list of revenue-generating activities that are consistent with the historic park. However, further development of this plan and its implementation will take time.

Meanwhile, the Association is raising $110,000 to keep the Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park open for an extra year under the supervision of the State Parks. We have already identified $40,000 in revenues and "in kind" and volunteer services. We have to raise the remaining $70,000, which will allow the school groups to participate in the Environmental Living Program (ELP) on two weekdays and allow the general public to use the park on weekends for 2012/13.

There s more good news. Earlier this month the Association has received a matching grant of $35,000 (from an Anonymous Donor) to save the Petaluma Adobe. But, we cannot claim these matching funds unless we raise contributions from you.

For more on the history of Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park: Click here for a Brief History

The building also celebrates important qualities such as initiative, ingenuity, and self-reliance, which we value in modern California. These are the qualities Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo exhibited when he created the Adobe to support his colony in Sonoma.

You can help to raise the $35,000 needed for the matching grant by making a tax deductible contribution to help keep the park open.

Read the letter recently sent out, by park staff, to fourth and fifth grade alumni of our programs: Alumni Letter

Please join with us in saving Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park; an important part of our history and a legacy to future generations.
